They also emit less heat and are much less traumatic when igniting HPS bulbs, resulting in a longer service life. While a traditional ballast requires an initial surge of 680/700 Watts to ignite a 600 Watt HPS bulb, an electronic ballast only requires 600/620 Watts. Furthermore, when traditional ballasts ignite the bulb, they are already at full power, and these repeated electrical shocks significantly reduce its lifespan and PAR output. Electronic ballasts ignite by sending a low power level to the bulb and slowly increasing it. In a few minutes, they bring the bulb to full power without trauma. This procedure is called SOFT STARTING and serves to minimize damage to the bulb, extending its "PAR life," which is the period during which the ratio between consumption and PAR emission (light actually used by the plant) is at its maximum efficiency. After a year of use, the PAR emission from an electronic ballast has decreased by 20-25%, whereas with a traditional ballast it will have suffered a decay of about 50-60%. Flickering (extremely fast fluctuation of light emission), sometimes even noticeable to the naked eye, which occurs with traditional ballasts, is completely absent with electronic ones, and this also translates into greater efficiency.
