Marshmallow is a very common plant in Europe that grows in damp places, along canals and ditches, belonging to the Malvaceae family. The importance of Marshmallow in cosmetic use is linked above all to its mucilage content, substances characteristic of plant cells which are recognized as having a useful moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effect on the skin and mucous membranes. These natural polysaccharides, when applied to the skin surface, form a thin, elastic, transparent film with an iso-epidermal pH, capable of releasing water to the stratum corneum, giving the skin elasticity and hydration. In unfavorable climatic conditions, the thin film formed by the mucilages dries externally, forming a real hygrometric shield that continues to hydrate the skin surface, hindering dehydration processes.
